Face Love: Tips & Tricks From Emily Mercer Beauty
December 10, 2020
Emily Mercer started her business, Emily Mercer Beauty, in the Fall of 2014. She works with a variety of companies in the Portland area for e-commerce and ad campaigns, being very talented (which I can personally attest to) Emily is sought after by various photographers for lifestyle, editorial, and boudoir photoshoots.
Her specific aesthetic is all about “Natural Enhancements” such as eyebrows, they are enhanced with brow waxing and tinting OR for a more permanent option, Nano tattoo!
With makeup and hairstyling, Emily likes to focus on elevating looks and gently enhance the unique beauty of each individual. She also provides makeup lessons, for those who need assistance in that area!
Emily often hears, “I don’t usually wear makeup during the day, so sometimes I wash my face at night, sometimes I don’t”. Her short answer to this.. NOOOOOO!
Even though someone may not be a makeup wearer, this does not mean that washing your face is only meant for done-up dolls. Every day with the environment we are constantly having dirt, bacteria, and oil on our skin that sits in the crevices and pores all day long. Plus we touch our faces. Plus all the other things that come into contact with our skin (fabrics, fragrances, etc.). Everyone needs to re-think the option of washing at night. Our skin needs to be cleansed so it can properly repair as we sleep!
Emily’s recommended cleaning regime!
Emily’s suggestion for the perfect cleaning regime include the following:
Two solid cleansers,
A day serum,
A night serum,
A moisturizer that works with your skin type
AND MOST IMPORTANTLY! A broadband UVA/UVB SPF, ideally SPF 50!
Wondering why you need two solid cleansers? At the end of every day, you have to take all of it off! One wash for what’s on top of the skin and one wash to really cleanse the skin. Some mix between oil, gel, and milky cleansers. Find your favorites!
Emily says Serums help to further protect from environmental damage during the day; she recommends thinking of the serum as the vitamins for the skin. She also recommends a serum at night to deeply replenish the skin.
A moisturizer is needed, but more so you need a moisturizer that “speaks” to that individuals’ skin! Emily’s expert tip is:
Oily skin- a lighter or gel formula needed
Dry skin- a heavier and creamier formula.
And last, but certainly not least….. SPF!
So what are Emily’s tips for maintaining glowing skin? Simple…..Exfoliate, exfoliate and one more time, Exfoliate! But do so gently. Emily says that since we are constantly shedding dead skin and replacing them with new skin cells, the more we exfoliate, the more we keep that process moving smoothly. Without exfoliations, we see clogged pores, premature aging, and dull skin.
Another key piece to maintaining healthy skin is Hydration. Emily emphasizes that there are different ways to add hydration to your skin. She personally loves Hydrosols. Hydrosols are botanically infused water that is like a “drink” of water for your face and her personal favorite is rosewater. She keeps one at home and in her car and throughout the day she sprays the refresh her makeup and adds more hydration. Side note: Just be sure to avoid your eyes if you’re wearing mascara!
Emily’s last tip would be incorporating facial massage into your weekly routine. She discusses how the reason people see awesome results after a facial is that the face is massaged like no tomorrow! It allows the lymph fluid to be moved and drained and to create more blood flow and circulations. Emily firmly believes that creating a habit of massaging the face with your favorite moisturizer, 2-3x a week, while watching a movie or show at home, is a great chance for your skin. And lastly, always be sure to massage upwards, pulling the skin and muscles UP, and be sure to be delicate around the eyes.
I am sure you are wondering “What amazing services can I add on to further enhance my natural beauty?” Well here you go!
Custom Epionce Facial: All Epionce products are used and the regimen is customized depending on the client’s current skin concerns. A mix of cleansing and steam, exfoliation and extraction, massage, Gua Sha stones, and jade rollers to achieve optimal results. Clients leave with their skin refreshed and revitalized, better able to absorb facial products and further minimize environmental damage.
Epionce Chemical Peel: The Lite Peel Refresh (pH 2.9) is an effective treatment to improve clarity and texture to the surface of the skin. This treatment is suitable for all skin types and leaves the skin smoother and less congested. In this treatment, the skin is prepped with a pre-peel solution and is applied the peel to the face, chest, and back of the hands. This will be left on for 5-10 minutes and a fan may be used for comfort (the skin gets a little warm and tingly). For optimal results, Emily recommends that you do 3-6 peel treatments, 2 weeks in between each treatment.
